Hello! First let me say the "Top Questions" section was a huge help and I have planned 4 days in Charleston in April down to the last meal! I only need help in deciding the best place to rent (and go) kayaking. We are birders, so we would probably prefer marsh areas over heavily wooded areas.

I really don't understand the intense dislike in the responses on the Savannah forum. I guess it depends on how you define “gay friendly”. I grew up in Charleston. It is not a place where gay people would have to worry about their safety any more than heterosexuals. People generally have a live and let live attitude. Having said that, Charleston offers very little in terms of gay culture.

The North Charleston Marriott on Goer Drive is very convenient and safe. Their parking lot is a favorite for locals, it's a better place than most shopping centers for leaving a car for hours. You can't walk anywhere from there but that's also true of most of the motels in Mt Pleasant. Charleston is a food city and there are countless options for you to enjoy at prices ranging from fairly inexpensive to high doller. In my opinion enjoying the taste of Charleston is key part of experiencing the city. 4. Depending on your personal taste you may enjoy spending some time shopping on King Street. I find it more welcoming, less pretentious and still affordable. Both offer charm, excellent dining choices, beautiful views and personality. I find Savannah a little less touristy and original. If you have any interest, it is possible to drive an hour or less and visit Hilton Head Island for the day from Savannah. 4.
