When you open the mission click the select drop-down that says "strength" it will show you the skills needed to get critical success for the mission. Sort by the requested trait and then officers with those traits will show. Blue dots mean they have that trait enabled, white dots mean they need to be enabled. Do two ships..depending on mission boss ship type, for example interceptor, hit with your non explorer 1st then immediately with your explorer. When your 2nd ship hits, the mission boss shield would not be full. PS. Above example is based on the assumption that all ships are equal power.
