If you only have one slot, you pretty much have to have Flame Swathe equipped.You need a pyromancy spell attuned, which requires you to have at least 10 attunement. Actual pyro flame item equipped + pyro spell attuned (need at least one attunement slot, of course). Switch to correct spell + pyro flame and press R1.Perfect to punish chuggers with. Then there's great combustion and warmth, that no pyromancer should live without. Other good ones are fire whip, outcry (very situational) and fire snake. Other useful, but not as awesome spells are dance of fire, great fireball, flame swathe, lingering flame.

Pyromancy doesn't scale the same way way hexes do. It scales equally with INT and FTH (softcap at 60 points between both stats). So pure sorcerers and clerics can also use them effectively because they don't have stat requirements, you can use them at base int/fth and still deal decent damage (~60% compared to softcapped damage)
