It was a real community. In 1940 the town had 1200 residents, most of whom had built or owned their own homes. Today it is less than 500, mostly folks who rent property. Laid out by Simon Stump in 1866, it became the county seat in 1869 and was officially. chartered as a town before the turn of the century.
