There is now a hole on the side of the arcane tower that a rat can fit through. So if you summon a rat as a familiar and send it through the hole, it can pull the lever to open the door. Not sure how it reaches the lever, since it's pretty high up on the wall, but I thought that was a cool addition. Archived post.
