Block Numbers by Starter = D7TE-A2B. Numbers by Oil Pressure Switch = 0819 102 The 8 could be a B. Number at rear of block under fly wheel = 58.

Doing a 408 conversion and need to know if I need a new crank. The "M" has a shorter stroke. I was told a while back that to use 400 pistons you have to use 400 rods because of the lengths between the 351M and 400 were different. But the same crank could be used as long as you change the pistons and rods. The rods are the same.

You can use a modified 400m crank,360 Mopar rods (I think you'll need to bush the small end), and 350 Chevy pistons;Joe Sherman built one about 10 yrs ago in Hot Rod magazine with these parts.With ported Windsor Sr.'s and a big roller cam he made 540hp@ 6500rpm!The 400 is a Cleveland, the 351M was a 400 block with a 351W crankshaft, Ford used the 351W crankshaft in the 400 block because they had a shortage of 400 cranks. There were a few rare 1st year 400C blocks with the SBF Windsor bell housing bolt pattern. That's the only sticking point. Clearancing the block, longer rods and shorter pin height pistons are a must for any stroker project. BroncoRoadKill is also correct about the price. Cleveland mains are much smaller than 351W,M, & 400. 351W and 400 bearings are different. 351M/400 and 351C use the same rod bearings. As for putting a W crank in a 351M/400, you can do it, I did it. I run an Eagle 4" stroker crank for a 351W with 400 bearings. I do believe TMI uses an Eagle 351W stroker blank for their 434ci stroker …

The 400 is obviously better, it has a extra 50 cubic inchesof displacement and the half inch of stroke on the grank that gets that displacement. So the 400 makes more power. They are a nightmare to balance when this is done because they require heavy metal added.
