Dark Pyromancy Flame is better than you think! It has long been believed that the Dark Pyromancy Flame (DPF) provides a tiny benefit at a great cost. At maximum hollowing, the DPF has only a slightly higher attack rating than the regular Pyromancy Flame (RPF). And when human, the RPF has an immensely greater attack rating than the DPF. Well if you're making pyromancy a focus, sure. But the thing is that it's viable at a much lower stat investment. It's perfectly reasonable to be a melee character that gets the attunement from some form of Southern Ritual Bands. Using a high value pyromancy with a +10 glove and low FAI/INT is kind of like a spiced down high value sorcery.

At around 43 attunement you can switch to majoring in pyromancy. Just make sure to pick up a melee weapon for the DLC content (since projectiles deal ~50% less damage). Imo, pure spellcaster is the easiest build in DS2 (for non-DLC content) but even there it puts in work. You need the right gear and good knowledge of resistances to make it work.
