Indeed, without the metal spears mod (not a must have for me, but definitely on my "common sense" shortlist for mod heavy runs), spears are best as an opening weapon imo. Great for clearing out the those groups of 3-6 zombies wandering around in the street outside your target, but best set aside when close quarters or hordes are on the menu.
